Some people claim that public museums and art galleries will not be needed because people can see historical objects and works of arts by using a computer. Do you agree or disagree with the following statement?
It is sometimes argued that museums and galleries will be completely replaced by digital ones. Although on-line exhibitions have many advantages with a vast application of advanced technologies, I think there are some irreplaceable elements in the physical venues.
Virtual art viewing, with 3D technologies and data analysis, has become a comprehensive and interactive experience. For example, Google Arts & Culture, featuring thousands of museums, can intelligently recommend sites, artists, masterpieces according to users’ preferences, and even invite them to participate in certain activities such as doing quizzes or mimicking an artwork. Moreover, virtual museums and art galleries can offer more research and context to items showcased, such as their history and techniques applied. They can also provide 360-degree panorama images and even internal images, as well as zoom capabilities, which are impossible in the real museums, where visitors can only appreciate works of art from a certain distance.
However, virtual representations cannot replace the experience of seeing in the real world, since art appreciation is about immersion into the atmosphere, not only acquisition and analysis of information. Visiting a museum or gallery is a leisure activity, when people can set their minds free from their daily work, dedicating themselves completely to the world of art. Listening to the soothing music, feeling that there is a group of people who share their interests, with a chance to chat with their fellow enthusiasts in the in-built cafés of the venues, helps them to better taste the aesthetic of art.
In conclusion, although the richness and intelligence of content enabled by virtual galleries are marvelous, I still regard them as a supplement, complementing and augmenting the physical museum experience.
